Heartbreak of a Bandslut
All of us go through life going to at least one performance of an unknown local band. The bands that we become friends with, and can always rely on them sending us back a myspace comment.
Lately though i’ve realised what happens when their dreams come true.
This short story involves one of my friends Casiee, and the drummer of a band called Short Stack.
Three years ago, before the band were famous, Casiee and Bradie would chat all the time and have great conversations. Lately though, since the band’s big hit on Channel[V], Bradie (and the rest of the band) isn’t as attentive to the fans that have been there since the beginning. In just March this year, I flew down to Sydney to see Short Stack for the first time live and wasn’t disappointed. The boys put on an awesome show, and afterwards, sat out in the foyer to have chats and photos with their fans. That’s the Short Stack i miss.
Only nine months later, at their Xmas show, Short Stack came out to sign autographs…only to be bound behind a bar. Fans had to lean over to get photos and autographs from them. I couldn’t believe that this once unknown band, now have security guards following them and keeping fans away. Bradie didn’t even remember Casiee when I talked to him.
Looking at Short Stack’s progress in this year alone, i’m extremely proud of them don’t get me wrong, but I can’t help but think…will other bands, friends, be lost to the world of fame.
Nothing makes me happier then seeing bands reach their goals and hit the world stage but sometimes they lose that glimmer from old fans.
This year, i’ve seen bands such as My Future Lies, Brand New Fashion and Finabah, who can simply come out into the crowd and chat before and after performances. I love chatting with ALL these guys and talking to them about their amazing music. I used to do this with Short Stack too, now i’m lucky to get a reply on myspace.
But nevertheless, I WILL be there supporting them every step of the way, even if they no longer know i’m there. I’ll just be another face in the crowd, but I will always know that they know they have my support.
